Skin Exfoliation

Exfoliation is the process by which the damaged, outer layer of the skin is eliminated. However, it can be quite challenging to delimitate the fine line between good irritation as a result of exfoliation and aggravated, inflamed skin. The best way is to be fairly clear on your skin type, and then follow up with skin type recommended exfoliation from a reliable resource.

Skin exfoliation will often cause some mild irritation. One must be careful not to exfoliate heavily as it can cause skin that goes beyond irritated to inflamed. There are many ways of facial exfoliation, one of the most popular is a process called Micro derm abrasion. Micro dermabrasion usually involves using tiny crystals to loosen and remove dead skin cells.

One of the very first and reknown methods of fighting mild to moderate cases of acne is using some form of skin exfoliation. Skin exfoliation is a process by which the dead skin cells from the outer layer of the skin are eradicated. Two common ways used to achieve this are chemical or mechanical.

Exfoliation is not meant in the evident saneness of the word, since you won't see skin peeling away as in the issue of shedding. The topmost layer of your skin is too thin to be viewable with the naked eye. In addition, chemical skin exfoliation is not part of the wet cleansing process. Chemical exfoliates are in fact, gels, lotions and creams that are used routinely, after the skin has been cleansed and dried. Normal exfoliation can be done every three weeks, though in some cases the time can be shortened to two weeks - but in general, three weeks is a perfect cycle to look at.

Exfoliating products generally have alpha-hydroxy acids, beta-hydroxy acids, or salicylic acids. Mild exfoliation can help your skin look damp and shiny, but harsh exfoliation should be avoided. Too much exfoliation can upset the barrier function of your skin, leaving you more gullible to dryness, sunburn and other skin problems. If your have skin that is likely to acne infestation, you can use as salicylic acid, clay masks or enzyme treatments as exfoliants.
