Chapped Lips


Chapped lips is a clinical condition whereby the lips become dry and possibly cracked that may be caused the evaporation of moisture from the lips especially upon heavy breathing through the mouth or licking of the lips caused by stuffed noses.

Chapped lips happens as a result of very dry skin on the lips. Dry skin results when the moisture content of the skin is minimised. Lips that are chapped may resemble the following qualities; roughness, dryness, redness, peeling, cracking and sensitivity. As a person's lips are often exposed to heat, sunshine, wind or cold air, the lips may become irritated prior to other parts of the body do.

Chapped lips are symptomed by dry, cracked, painful lips and may result in a red ring around the mouth. In the summer, the sun can be amenable for chapped lips, but routine use of a lip balm containing sunscreen can prevent summertime chapped lips.

In the wintertime, chapped lips are a more common complication, because the air is dry and the cold wind further dries the lips out. Many people lick their lips to relieve the dryness, making the condition worse. Simply as in the summertime, treating chapped lips in the winter can make use of a moisturizing lip balm having sunscreen. Petroleum jelly or beeswax based lip balm is valuable in preventing chapped lips.

  • Frequent use of soaps and other chemicals .

Symptoms of Chapped lips

Common Symptoms of Chapped lips :

  • Redness.
  • Mild pain.
  • Pain.
  • Bleeding .
  • Sensitivity of lips.
  • Dryness.
  • Loss of moisture from the lips .

The following steps are very beneficial to get rid of chapped lips

  • Apply petroleum jelly or lip balm on the chapped lips. One can also use the essential oil which contains vitamin E, skin moisturizer or gel, that includes aloe Vera. These oily products are very effective to keep the lips moisturized.
  • Apply a lip balm two times a day one time in the morning and other before going to bed at night to get smooth lips.
  • Take a small amount of petroleum jelly and massage it on the dry lips. It is very effective to get soft skin of lips. After this, use a damp or warm facecloth for rubbing the lips gently.
  • Before going to outside, always apply coat of lip balm which includes sun block.
  • One should drink large quantity of water like 10-12 glasses of water in a day to prevent dehydration.
  • During the daytime, use moisturing lipstick for preventing lips from dryness.
Prevention Tips
  • Avoid more exposure to sun rays.
  • Do not go out in cold and dry weather before applying lipstick or lip balm .
  • Keep the air in home humid .
  • Dab one a small quantity of petroleum jelly or lip balm before using lipstick to give lips moisture.
